Are You Productivity Obsessed?

Over at Pick The Brain, John Wesley has a funny and all-too-accurate post exploring how his search for A Productivity Filled Day may have led him down the path of productivity obssession!

I’ve been there far too often. A recent example is when I needed to merge two Excel columns into a single, text-formatted column. I knew there was an “productive” way to do it. So instead of just jumping in and cutting and pasting I went on a search for the Productive Way to get it done.

Ninety minutes later I had my answer and had completed the task that would have taken about 20-minutes to complete the Non-Productive way!

Now here’s the learning for me, and maybe for you too. If that little Excel trick was something I was going to use on a regular basis and would have saved me time over the next few weeks and months it certainly would have been worth the search and implementation. But because this was, as far as I can tell, a one-time event, my productivity obsession cost me more than one-hour that I will probably not make up.

So the point is to analyze the long-term benefits and time-savings of any productivity tools and techniques BEFORE embarking on a Productivity Obsession Expedition!

I totally relate!! Hmm take that 90 minutes however and distribute it out for however many times you will use it, and however many times you can help others, and the happy returns and feelings of techie guru start to justify themselves. 😀

Dawn: True true! Unfortunately the allure of “techie guru” status has been somewhat too appealing to me in the past!

      Got something to say?
